Decolonizing Approaches on Black Health: Black Voices – A panel discussion between Black medical professionals.

Health is a human right

This means that every person, regardless of origin, gender, social status, religion, sexual orientation, etc., should have equal access to equivalent medical care. This right must be implemented in accordance with the UN Social Covenant. However, the reality speaks a different language. Many people are certainly aware of the disparities in medical care given the divergent political and socio-economic positions of countries in the global South and North, which must be placed in the context of the global system. At the height of the pandemic, disadvantage and exclusion, especially on the basis of ethnicity, were even more evident than they already were (Annual Report 2020 of the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency ADS). For this reason, it is important to perceive, name, and in the next step measure and analyze the disadvantages of Black people in relation to health care – as was done for the first time in the Afrozensus 2020. In this context, it is important to first address the history of medicine, colonial continuities in structures, as well as clinical terminology in order to sensitize all those involved in health care.
