Xaraasi Xanne (Crossing Voices) – Film Screening and Talk

with Raphaël Grisey and Olivier Marboeuf

moderated by Aminata Diouf and Agnes Stillger

Using rare film, photo and sound archives, Xaraasi Xanne (Crossing Voices) narrates the adventure of Somankidi Coura, an agricultural cooperative started in 1977 by West African migrant workers in Paris. This story of a utopian return home follows a winding path that leads from the 1970s to the present. For the cinematic narrative, Bouba Touré returns to the heart of his personal archive. His photographs document the situation of peasants in France and Mali as well as the personal stories of migrant workers over many decades. Moreover, the film is also a narrative of transmission, kinship, and cinematographic geographies. It tells the story of Bouba Touré’s relationship with filmmaker Raphaël Grisey, but also of Touré’s relationship with militant filmmakers such as Sidney Sokhona and Med Hondo. As the film progresses, more voices enter the soundscape. They carry the story of a forgotten memory into a possible future; sung by an electronic griot narrator.
