DIALAW-PROJECT
local residents defend themselves against a mega-neoliberal port construction project near Dakar. In the future, a large part of West Africa’s trade in goods with Europe will be handled from here – at the very same place from which centuries ago slaves were shipped overseas with brutal force.

The large construction site is only a few meters away from the école de sable, the training school that dancer and choreographer Germaine Acogny founded decades ago.

The destruction of their village and neighboring communities will be the inevitable result. Even though local residents had initially hoped that this construction project would create jobs, they are now rather hostile to what will bring an unforeseeable upheaval to the local ecosystem.

DIALAW-Project examines the economic and human relations that link Europe and Africa, as well as the risks of modernity with all its hopes, acts of violence, contradictions and dangers of a rapid globalization that threatens our planet.

Germaine Acogny is considered the creator of African contemporary dance and was recently honored for her life’s work with the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale.
